AUGUST 1 PROTEST: OGUNJOBI CAITIONS PROTESTERS, ADVICES LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENTS

Chief Abiodun Samuel Ogunjobi. A. K. A. Te-Sojue has adviced prospective protesters planning a national mass protest for August 1, 2024 to tow the path of peace in their protest. Peaceful protest, he said, is an inalienable right of citizens. But violence and destruction of properties constitute a crime punishable in law.

Speaking at his Ikeja, Lagos residence yesterday, Ogunjobi said protests all over the world are allowed and represent the mind of the people. However when protesters resort to violence, acts of brigandage and disruption of public and private lives of other people  the resulting anarchy is an ill wind that blows nobody any good.

He also adviced the protesters take measures to stop hoodlums and criminal elements from taking advantage of the protests to perpetrate their criminal and nefarious activities.

Abiodun also enjoined government and security agents not to treat the protesters as criminals but as citizens expressing their civic rights.

Government, he said should listen to the grouses of the protesters and avoid using maximum force on the protesting citizens.

Police and other security agencies should employ modern crowd control  methods instead of brutal force and use of live ammunitions on the protesters.

Non-protesting Nigerians according to him should avoid flash points during the period of stay at home.

Chief Abiodun Samuel Ogunjobi is the Ashiwaju of Oje in Ibadan.
